Activists gather in Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul, Turkey, on October 10. Likely increase in security and transportation disruptions.

The activists announced their intention to gather in several cities in Turkey, including Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul, on October 10. The purpose of the rallies is to pay tribute to the victims of the October 10, 2015 suicide bombing. No group claimed responsibility for the two bombs that exploded outside Ankara’s central train station, killing 109 people, but a Turkish court sentenced nine Islamic State (IS) operatives to life in prison for the 2018 attack.

Thousands of people are likely to attend the commemorative events. The organizers have announced the following rally times and locations:

  • 10:04: Ankara Central Station in Ankara

  • 19:00: Kadikoy Pier Square in Istanbul

  • 09:30: Monument of October 10 in Izmir

Increased security, as well as localized transportation and business disruptions, are likely near all events.

Avoid gatherings as a standard precaution and to mitigate likely ground movement delays. Expect road travel delays in and near impact areas. Take into account the instructions of the security forces. If violence erupts nearby, leave the area immediately and seek refuge in a safe, non-governmental building.
