One dead and one missing in flood-hit Ankara

A young woman named Busenur Doğanay, residing in the basement of Ankara’s Keçiören district, died from flooding that occurred after a heavy downpour in the city, Ankara Governor Vasip Şahin said, adding that the search for missing person continues.

“The teams arrived here as soon as possible and made the necessary efforts,” Şahin said. “But unfortunately the water came up to half of the ground floor and there was a flash flood at the back of the building.”

Avenues and streets filled with water due to heavy showers, especially in the neighborhoods of Keçiören, Yenimahalle and Etimesgut.

In some areas, cars were stuck on the road and submerged in water. Homes and workplaces on the ground floors of buildings were flooded. As citizens attempted to evacuate the water, firefighters began evacuation efforts.

“There were 20 kilograms of precipitation per square meter in 20 minutes. We have to take action considering these types of events,” Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş said, adding that there was also flooding in Haymana district.

“When such information comes from the meteorological office, we send a message especially to the village leaders to make an announcement. However, there is no such opportunity in the urban area,” Yavaş added.

“The water rushes on the asphalt roads and causes flooding,” said the mayor, recalling that the infrastructure of these places will be completely renewed and that the feasibility is currently underway.

“Upon reaching a flooded house due to heavy rain in Keçiören around 5 p.m., a woman was found dead,” Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.

“The search for a missing person continues. Sorry for our loss,” he added.

In the northern province of Artvin’s Hopa district, the driver of a truck, which was under giant boulders after a landslide, died, officials said.

The truck parked on the side of the road got stuck under giant boulders that broke off the slope.

Upon notification of other drivers, search and rescue teams, police, and medical officials arrived and began attempting to determine if there were any other vehicles under the rocks.
