Bosnian megastar Dino Merlin will delight Ankara with poetic songs


Famous Bosnian-Herzegovinian singer Dino Merlin is set to take the stage at the Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO) hall in the Turkish capital Ankara with an exclusive concert on June 2. Merlin was born as “Edin Dervishalidovic” in 1962 in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, then part of the Republic of Yugoslavia. “Dino” was actually the nickname his mother used to call him when he was little. His father was an Albanian carpenter while his mother was a Muslim cleric. After his parents’ divorce, Merlin was brought up by his mother, and his upbringing in a religious atmosphere influenced the artistry of the master musician. He even began his musical career as a müezzin, or reciter of the call to prayer. According to Merlin, the religious atmosphere somehow formed his identity and contributed to his art.

Although he wanted to attend music school after his elementary education, Merlin enrolled in Sarajevo Technical High School in accordance with his mother’s wishes. His mother didn’t want Merlin to pursue a career in music but she helped him buy his very first guitar. Merlin first learned the chords and started writing his own songs. The self-made artist went on to found the rock band “Merlin” with his childhood friend and keyboardist Mirsad Lutvica in 1983. The duo recorded five albums together and became one of the best-selling rock bands in Southern Europe. Southeast with their tracks.

Merlin was heavily influenced by Yugoslav musicians Bijelo Dugme, Zdravko Colic, Kemal Monteno and Toma Zdravkovic, and participated in many music competitions covering their songs. Noting that the music that inspires him the most at any given moment usually matches the moods, atmospheres and situations he finds himself in, the singer explains, “People are usually looking for comfort; some eventually find it in music or reading a good book, while others find it in a temple, be it a mosque or a church. Music for me is a kind of consolation and when I hear a song that inspires me, it comforts and consoles me for those three to four minutes and for me, that’s enough. Merlin also liked the music of Western artists. Among them were the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel and Leonard Cohen.

In 1991, Merlin began his solo career, creating a big impression in the music world in a fairly short period of time. He recorded six studio albums, which are “Moja bogda sna” (“My little piece of dream”) in 1993, “Fotografija” (“Photography”) in 1995, “Sredinom” (“Through the middle”) in 2000, “Burek” (“Pastry”) in 2004, “Ispocetka” (“From the beginning”) in 2008 and “Hotel Nacional” in 2014.

While many Balkan musicians left the region during the 1990s war in Bosnia, Merlin stayed in Sarajevo to bring hope with his moving songs. He cemented his status in the Bosnian collective consciousness with his song “Da te nije Alija” (“If there weren’t you Alija”), written in honor of the late President of Bosnia and Herzegovina Alija Izetbegovic. The audience was very moved when they performed the song in front of 100,000 spectators in Sarajevo’s biggest stadium, Kosevo. The delicate singer also composed other patriotic songs, such as “Bosnom Behar Probeharao” (“All Bosnia, flowers bloomed”) and “Vojnik srece” (“Soldier of Happiness”), during this time. Merlin also wrote the lyrics to Bosnia’s first national anthem, “Jedna si jedina” (“You are the one and only”), which was Bosnia’s official national anthem from 1992 to 1998.

Merlin’s “Sredinom” album was the best-selling album in six countries that were once part of the former Yugoslavia. His next album “Burek” includes Turkish verses on some tracks dedicated to Sarajevo.

In addition, Merlin has participated in many European festivals to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina, including Eurovision Song Contest, Copenhagen Festival and Turkvision. With his latest studio album “Hotel Nacional”, the singer also managed to enter the Top 10 of Billboard’s Top World Albums chart, becoming the only artist from Slavic-speaking Europe to make the list. Speaking about his feelings after hearing his Billboard recognition, Merlin said, “Upon release, the album debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. With this album, we were able to tour and perform in front of 1 million people around the world and many of those songs are still alive after all these years. Of course, getting on Billboard was a big accomplishment as well as a great compliment and testament to the quality of the album, but I believe the greatest prize you can receive is the one bestowed on you by your audience.
